It can be normal for someone to lose their appetite when they are unwell, but weight loss should try to be avoided, especially for the elderly. When kids are in hospital it is normal for the amount of food they eat to change. After all, they’re unwell, they are in a new place and the food is different. Try small, frequent snacks when your child is sick. This can help to improve their nutrition and is often better tolerated than large meals.

Remember: the person you are caring for needs you to stay fit and healthy. Eating well is a key component of taking care of yourself – but sometimes, it can be hard to find the time and energy to prepare nutritious meals. Protein is important in a healthy diet. Protein builds and maintains muscle to keep you strong and fit. Everyone’s protein needs are different. Most older adults need at least 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. For example, if you weigh 65kgs, you need at least 65 grams of protein each day.
